The core technologies involved in color packaging and printing processes primarily include the following:
Four-color printing (CMYK)
Color images and text are created by layering four inks—Cyan (C), Magenta (M), Yellow (Y), and Black (K)—making it the most fundamental and widely used process in packaging printing, suitable for a variety of substrates.
Spot Color Printing
Using specialized inks for direct color printing (such as spot gold or spot silver) produces brighter, more vibrant colors that cannot be achieved through traditional four-color process mixing. Colors must be selected using the Pantone color chart, and gradient effects are not possible with this method.
Laminated with gloss/matte laminate
Applying a hot-press lamination to enhance either a glossy or matte finish, while simultaneously protecting the print and boosting its durability, is a fundamental technique in box surface finishing. Glossy lamination results in a shiny surface, whereas matte lamination creates a subtle, non-reflective finish.
UV Spot Coating
To enhance the gloss and brightness of specific areas on printed materials, boosting the three-dimensional effect of the design, this is often combined with matte lamination.
Hot stamping (gold/silver foil)
Using thermal transfer technology, a metallic gloss effect is created on the surface of the substrate, enabling single-color hot stamping (such as gold, silver, red, green, or blue), though the variety of colors remains limited.
Embossing/Debossing
Using molds to press embossed, three-dimensional patterns and text—ideal for paper but not suitable for cardboard—this technique enhances the packaging's sense of depth and dimension.
Screen printing
Highly adaptable, it can print on flat, curved, and uneven surfaces, making it ideal for complex structures like packaging boxes and composite bags.
Other auxiliary processes include inkjet coding (printing production dates), composite bag manufacturing (vacuum packaging), and blister tray insertion (for product stabilization), among others.
